Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has been launched to make India clean. The Abhiyan was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd October 2014, paying homage to Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and former Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri. Here we will discuss on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Wiki.

While launching the Abhiyan, the Prime Minister appealed to the people of the nation to fulfill Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of clean India. He also urged every citizen to join to take up the mission and make it a mass movement. He also exhorted people to give 100 hours a year towards making India clean. Many celebrities also joined the noble cause.

Objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

It is the largest cleanliness drive India has witnessed ever. 3 million government employees, school and college students and a mass of people joined it. The main objectives of the mission are:

  • To make clean India by the year 2019
  • To eliminate open defecation by constructing individual, cluster and community toilets.
  • To establishing an accountable mechanism for monitoring of latrine use.
  • To run an awareness program on the importance of the use of toilets and importance of hygiene.
  • To eradicate manual scavenging and municipal solid waste management.
  • To bring about behavioral change in people with respect to healthy sanitation practices.

Implementation of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

For implementation, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is divided into Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Urban) and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Gramin).

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Urban) aims to help construct individual toilet which covers 1.04 crore households, to providing 2.5 lakh community toilets and 2.6 lakh public toilets. The programme will cover 4,401 towns over a period of five years.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Gramin) aims to make India an open defecation free country. It is also focused on improving levels of cleanliness in rural areas; Solid and Liquid Waste Management activities are to be employed. Earlier Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan was there for sanitation in the rural area. It is restructured as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Gramin).

Under the program, about 11 crores 11 lakh toilets will be built in rural India. The mission will actively involve every gram panchayat, Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad in the cause for cleanliness. Communities will be motivated to join the mission. Individual Household toilets will be constructed for BPL Households and APL households. Community and public toilets will also be built.

The estimated cost of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is Rs. 620 billion. The mission has received funds and technical support from the World Bank and state governments.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a noble initiative and is implemented on the war footing. It is a duty of everyone to join for the cause and work towards making India clean and healthy nation.
