Beware of Health Care Discount Scam

Millions of people lost their jobs due to a critical recession and along with that they also lost health insurance coverage provided by their employer. They seek for affordable health coverage with low premium rates and unfortunately they caught in discount health plans rather than real health insurance coverage. Here we discuss all fraud health insurance plans and health care scams. In California, about 150 complaints about unlicensed discount health plans are lodged with officials.

However, all discounted health plans are not termed as fraud then also always understand the difference of both. If we consider discount plans, they are not health insurance because they only offer a discount in medical facilities or in fees of physicians. Most of the time, this discount cards do not accept by the majority of physicians and also a list of suggested doctors (provided in a plan) is not updated. If any insurer provides this kind of discount plan, get a list of providers and call them to be sure they recognize and still accept the plan before sign up with insurance.

Generally, those people who get paid monthly fees for physician visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, dental work, eye care and other treatment are preferred discount plans. This plan has a value if a person can’t afford health insurance but keep in mind that it is not the ultimate health insurance so that all medical bills he has to pay by himself.

Few states offer consumer protections without any licensing or healthcare background instead of health insurance coverage. Without reading all conditions and facilities of new health insurance, never cancel coverage. If anyone found a better deal in discount, he should also check for hidden administrative fees or another hidden cost. Also, call to the engaged physician and provider about a reality of discounts.

There are some common words used by scammers like “Save up to 60% on health care”, “Affordable health coverage”, “Guaranteed benefits “, “Long term care” discounts, etc. There are very few providers that offer 60% discount on health care while a majority of them only offer 5% to 20%. Long-term care discounts are not health insurance because they use the term ‘discounts’.

Before sign up with discount offers on the medicine and medical treatment, check which medical conditions, medicines, treatments and other services are included. Many times, the scammers ask for credit card or checking account number which can be used for identity theft schemes later. Never provide any personal information over phone or internet without verifying the call.

Call state insurance department and the Better Business Bureau to see if other consumers have complained about the discount card in which you are enrolling.
