IRCTC’s Travel Insurance Cover of Rs 10 Lakh at a Premium of Rs 1 for Railway Travelers
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, IRCTC has introduced an insurance providing up to Rs 10 lakh cover to its railway travellers at a just premium of Rs 1. This optional insurance is being offered from 1st September to those passengers who book e-ticket irrespective of class of the ticket. Currently, the scheme excludes suburban trains.
IRCTC has joined hands with ICICI Lombard General Insurance, Shriram General and Royal Sundaram in the wake of increasing cases of accidents and difficulties faced by kith and kin of deceased or injured following it. IRCTC had invited bids for it and 19 companies had participated in the process. Right now it has made a contract with the providers for a year. The contract could be extended seeing through the performance.
According to the insurance scheme, train travellers or their families are entitled to compensation of up to Rs 10 lakh if death or permanent total disability occurs, up to 7.5 lakh in the event of permanent partial disability, up to Rs 2 lakh towards hospitalization expenses as well as Rs 10,000 for transportation of mortal remains.
When tickets are booked online, a check box is provided to select the option for insurance cover. You check it if you want to get the cover. The premium amount will be added to your ticket fare. Once the fare including premium is paid, you will get a message displaying nomination detail. You will have to provide the details as it is needed in the event of any mishap. If you want to cover a child of the age below 5 years, you have to provide necessary details at the time of booking your ticket. If you cancel tickets, your premium amount will automatically be refunded to your account through which you paid for booking the ticket; the administrative charge will be deducted from it.
Train accidental cases are treated as specified under Sections 123 read with Sections 124 and 124A of the Railways Act, 1989. The insurance coverage is uniform to travellers of the classes. It covers a train accident or other unforeseen incident while travelling in a train such as terrorist attacks, riots taking place, arson, shoot-out etc.
Claims are to be placed with IRCTC immediately in the event of incidence. You can’t make claims after four months of it. You have to submit necessary documents with it. The claim will be processed immediately and you will get a cheque containing coverage within 15 days.
